Title: Zombieland

| CONSUMER ADVICE |
Parents, there is a good amount of langauge and horror violence. Recommended for ages 17 and up. |
People ask me what my problem with zombie movies these days are. They point out that most of them are there just to scare you and don’t need to be any deeper than that. I disagree. Not only is a good movie a good movie, but zombie movies tend to be in especially poor quality. If this is a genre that doesn’t aspire to much then why is it so hard to be just a “tab bit” better then everything else out there? So poor is this genre that it’s been ripe for spoofing. It’s been spoofed more than the romantic comedy genre. These spoofs range from okay to brilliant. “Zombieland” is both a clever spoof AND a good zombie movie! The movie takes place sometime in the future, where zombies have taken over everything.

How this happened has been forgotten. Only one thing is certain: The few remaining need to stay alive. The main protagonist is Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg), who walks the Earth alone. He is still alive because he keeps a checklist of survival techniques (Rule #11. Always look in the back seat of your car). He is joined by Tallaassee (Woody Harrelson), a skilled zombie killer who roams the world looking for the perfect Hostess Twinkie (and I just want to say right now that this is probably the best product placement since E.T. followed Reese’s Pieces). Both of them are sort of neurotic so it makes sense that they can stand each others company. Eventually they run into a couple of girls who steal their truck.

Then they steal it back. Then they back. It all sounds sort of silly...and that’s because it totally is! The movie is not only a riot to watch but it’s got several great action sequences to boot. The zombies really are scary. Unlike the zombies of old, these one’s jump, run, and travel in packs. For mindless beings they sure are...well, clever little buggers. After watching this film I discovered this was originally pitched to be a TV series. Since the show wasn’t picked up though the creators decided to make it into a feature film instead. Watching it I could see this being a very good show. The list of rules would most likely become great running gags and the characters would eventually discover why the world has zombies in the first place.

Instead we have to settle for this film. There’s no shame in this. It’s a good film. A great one even. I’m now convinced more then ever that TV producers wouldn’t know a good show if it walked up to them and punched them in the nut sacks. Like, really? Someone passed on this? I could easily see this becoming a runaway hit for something like The CW (who could probably use one now that “Smallville” is ending). Oh well, mom always told me to be grateful for what we have and not what we don’t. And really, I’m thankful that the movie studios got what was so great about this even when the TV studios didn’t. It’s funny, original, and thrilling to boot. It makes many previous zombie spoofs look like child’s play.

It’s a great looking film that has had lots of care put into making it. I suspect that even though it’s not a TV show it will likely become a movie franchise to be reckoned with. There’s an awesome cameo by...no, I’m not going to spoil it (I imagine at least two of my friends screaming at me in horror at the very thought of spoiling the fact that it’s...sorry, never mind). The movie is violent but not TOO violent! At least, there’s enough laughs to ignore the bloodshed. Some would argue that “Zombieland” is not great film making, but for all the reasons I previously mentioned I would strongly disagree. This IS strong film making! It would have made for great TV as well. But alas, it was not meant to be. I hope some TV executive got fired for passing this up.
