CONSUMER ADVICE

Parents, despite the lack of visuals, there is strong sexual content and suggestive themes. There is a baby birth that is easily the most graphic I've seen. Recommended for ages 16 and up.

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” was supposed to bring us one of movie histories most anticipated deflowering on camera. Considering how there have been three movies hyping up the whole wait for sex thing, it's sort of amazing that the producers went in this direction only to cop out in the end. We DO see the results of the deflowering though! We see the bed destroyed, pillow torn up, and feathers everywhere. I mean, jees, what happened that night? I mean, I've seen enough sex scenes in the movies to not have to see another one, but I admit that my curiousity is peaked here. It may also explain why the movie doesn't have a whole lot to do.

“The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” is - as you may have guessed – the first part of this story. Did the novel need to be broken up into two films? I'm not convinced. Considering how little there is to work with on screen, I think one movie would have worked just fine. This is a two hour movie where for the first hour we get to watch Bella and Edward get married and go on their honeymoon. However, because of the damage inflected on the bed due to the night of passion, Edward has pretty much decided not to have sex with her anymore. Again…most anticipated deflowering EVER! And we don't even go back for seconds. Never mind, once is enough for Bella to get pregnant with a demon child.

This sets up the second half of the film where the demon child is killing Bella from the inside, but she doesn't want to abort it. Never mind that if she doesn't abort she'll die before she can give birth, but try telling that to an airhead like her (who hasn't done much in this series when you get down to it). This is also convieniant for the screenplay because it needs an excuse to get the werewolves to try and fight the vampires over the demon baby. When they do fight there is a surprising lack of tension or weight. I know the Twilight films have always been made cheaply, but the wolves just don't have any weight behind them.

When its time for the vampires to fight them, the big climax looks like they're tossing around bags of potatoes. Its amateurish film making at best, sloppy film making at worst. What's most disappointing is that the film was directed by Bill Condon, who directed “Dreamgirls,” so it seems like he would know how to handle a big story. No such luck it turns out. “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” is poor film making and leads up to a lot of hot air. I know there's a second part to this thing, but if its anything like this film then audiences have no reason to anticipate it for any reason what-so-ever.
