Title: The Sorcerer’s Apprentice
|
| CONSUMER ADVICE |
Parents, this film has a slight amount of bad language and violence, but nothing too offensive. Recommended for ages 8 and up. |
“The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” has more fun with special effects then any other movies I’ve seen all year wrong. Here is a movie that has a budget and knows how to use it creatively. One scene in particular got me all giddy. This scene involves the main characters in a high speed car chase as they attempt to get a powerful object of sorts back from the villain of the movie. Car chases are standard, but how many have you seen where cars change, fly, and even hop onto the opposite side of the mirror with a trippy spell? Scenes like this and many more suggest that “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” was actually a surprise hit in the making.

Sadly once the characters open their mouth you want nothing more then to strangle them. The story involves Balthazar Blake (Academy Award-winner Nicolas Cage, sporting yet another bad haircut), an apprentice of Merlin who has lived for over a thousand years as he attempts to Merlin’s heir. Years later he finds that heir in a young boy named David (Jay Baruchel). Now David is a wuss. Socially awkward, not very bright, and has a bad reputation. He talks almost as if he wants to stutter but somehow says complete words...which for some reason almost makes you think he’d be less annoying if he did stutter.

Actually, it’s kind of funny for me to watch Dave because I have a friend who acts EXACTLY like this! Down to the mannerisms he reminded me of my friend. However my friend has a medical disability that makes him socially awkward. Can we say the same about Dave? Sorry, getting off topic here. There’s also a bad guy here named Maxim (Alfred Molina) who is trying to free a powerful evil. Sadly, he’s so much more charismatic then the main character I found myself rooting for him to win instead. But the special effects...boy are the special effects fun. I think director Jon Turteltaub is more comfortable with visuals then he is with story.

He’s also the director of the “National Treasure” movies, films that were equally stupid but exciting to watch none-the-less. If people I know come out of this movie and enjoy it I won’t be surprised. That said I think many people are going to have a hard time getting around Dave. Seriously, he such an annoying, bumbling duffus that has nothing else on his mind except his childhood friend. He’s an idiot and she’s a bimbo, so of course they’re perfect for each other. “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” has lots of fun with it’s visuals but the story is a bore and the characters a chore to get around. It’s not quite a train wreck, but the caboose is loose at least.
