CONSUMER ADVICE

Parents, there many stylish fight sequences, some mild language, and some sexuel content. Mostly it's cartoonish. Recommended for ages 12 and up.

Now THIS is what I’m talking about! When people talk to me they assume that I’m a snotty film buff who can’t appreciate a good piece of pop culture. They feel that when I give movies like “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” “Pirates of the Carribean: At World’s End,” and “The Last Airbender” negative reviews that I simply cannot see the fun of them. They think I demand art instead of entertainment. I tell them all the time that I enjoy movies that are not meant to be deep but entertaining...but the key word in there is entertainment. If the movie isn’t entertaining then I have a right to complain.

This is why “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” is not only a good example of how to make popcorn entertainment right, but also one of the best films of the year. The film is a high-wire vision of pure craziness. Everything about it oozes with originality and style. Many people have adapted comic books to the big screen. Some of these adaptations even feel like comics in nature. But director Edgar Wright has actually taken the comic and made the film look and feel like one. For the first time I believed a comic had been brought to life. The story is bizarre to say the least. It revolves around the title character Scott (Michael Cera being the Michael Ceraist he’s ever been) who falls in love with a girl with pink hair.

Her name is Ramona (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) and she’s attitude to spare. It doesn’t look like Her and Scott would have anything in common. This turns out to be true but it’s there different personalities that make them so convincing as a couple. There’s just one catch: In order to date her Scott must defeat her Seven Evil Ex’s. This leads to characters flying around, turning into coins upon death, and gaining psychic powers from becoming vegan (complete with a Vegan Police to take away said powers if one eats non-vegan food three times). Yeah, this is a pretty weird film. In fact, in all honesty, it doesn’t even make that much sense. So why do I give it my highest rating possible?

Because it’s FUN darnit! The director of this movie knows dialog. He knows characters. I wasn’t sure he knew how to handle special effects, but it turns out he does. He knows how to put this all together in one fun package that it’s never boring and it’s always a hoot. Or - in short - he knows what makes a good movie. And yes, I expect some people will hate this. It’s SO over-the-top that many people will walk out of it not knowing what the hell it was they just watched! Watching a guy get thrown to the top of a building with a giant “throw” popping out of the screen is likely to have many people scratching their heads in confusion. To those people I say this: No, your not dreaming, the movie really doesn’t make any sense.

Even in it’s own little universe I can’t say it makes sense because most of the characters in the film seem to be more confused then I was (particularly Scott Pilgrim himself, as he wonders why he can’t just live in peace). Yet the movie works largely because it’s got imagination, style, and it’s not dumb. After awhile you just sort of go along with it and enjoy it despite the fact that it seems like a movie not worth loving. I also confess that many of the characters are memorable and extremely likable. I anticipate knee-jerk reaction negative reviews on opening day, but in time I think this will go down as a classic. A weird, trippy, I’m-not-exactly-sure-why-I-love-this-crap classic, but a classic none-the-less.
