Title: Marmaduke
|
| CONSUMER ADVICE |
Parents, there's not much to be offended of here except stupidity. Recommended for ages 5 and up. |
There is a scene early in the movie where we see Marmaduke rambling on and on about stuff we don’t care about. In the middle of a monolog he suddenly burps and says “I know it’s crude, but it’s what I got.” At this point I almost walked out of the theater, happily shouting “By guys! This movie just reviewed itself.” Because really, what else can I say about this movie? It's another talking animal movie that is about as average as you can imagine, made all the more painful by the fact that the lead character is extremely annoying. “Marmaduke” is based off the 56-year old syndicated comic strip.

The running gag for the one strip comic is that Marmaduke is a big dog...and boy, that describes this movie more then you’d know. The title character is voiced by Owen Wilson, which will already rub fans of the comic strip the wrong way because fans will recall Marmaduke didn’t talk. But movie Marmaduke talks. And talks, and talks, and basically won’t shut up. I know that when you hire a celebrity to do voice over work you want to get your moneys worth, but does this include annoying the audience to death? Marmaduke is neither someone you want to listen to nor does he say anything really funny. His sidekick cat friend is Carlos, who is voiced by George Lopez. The role of Carlos - if I’m reading into this correctly - is to be annoyed by Marmaduke. Why they need a character on screen to do this when the audience already knows the dog is annoying is a mystery to me.

The story is...well, the story tries to be about Marmaduke getting used to a new life in California, but the dog talks so much through it it’s hard to think the movie is about anything other then him. The movie is mercifully short but parents are likely to feel ripped off after seeing this movie. It’s about nothing I can grasp, the special effects are nothing to note, and the dog is annoying as hell. I also must ask why do actors make movies like these? When you voice a Disney character their animators will make the character look like you. Here though it’s just your voice on top of an ugly animal. I guess some people just like to work. And for them “Marmaduke” may not be much, but it’s what they’ve got at the moment.
