Title: Knight & Day
|
| CONSUMER ADVICE |
Parents, the violence is mostly slapstick but there are several heavy uses of language and sex jokes. Recommended for ages 12 and up. |
“Knight & Day” may not be a great movie but it’s a very fun movie. Fast moving, absurd to a perfection, and further proof that Tom Cruise can hold a movie almost effortlessly. I don’t expect you to discuss it much beyond the parking lot and normally that would be enough for me to not recommend it...but this time I might just have to break one of my personal rules. The movie stars Cameron Diaz as June, a mechanic who is trying to fly home so she can go to her sisters wedding. On the flight though she meets Roy (Cruise) who is charming and nice, but in a moment of passion ends up killing all the passengers on the plane including the pilots.

Though Roy ultimately saves her she is now fearing for her life as the FBI is now trying to get a hold of her. This prompts Roy to whisk her up from her home and take her with him while he tries to save a friend of his (he makes funny hand gestures to measure her chances of survival without him around in his argument). This is the basic setup for what is essentially two hours of visual action gags. It’s almost painful to think of how much money it cost to make something of so little social importance. Yet I liked the movie. Yes it was about as predictable as you can come and had no lingering value, but while it lasts it’s lots of fun.

Cruise shows that he’s still a movie star, grinning for the camera and stealing everything he’s in. His eccentric portrayal of Roy is so endearing it saves the movie from pure mediocrity. Less impressive is Cameron Diaz who is looking less cute by the day and doesn’t have the acting chops to pull off most of the films jokes. She’s not annoying but she’s also not very memorable...minus one funny scene where she’s on truth cerium and ends up saying lots of inappropriate things. The action sequences are by far the most ludicrous thing about the film. Overtly big, extremely unrealistic, they almost play out like a Simpsons parody.

Yet I didn’t mind because...well, because the film is so absurd the action scenes come off more like camera winking then anything else. Ultimately I’m convinced that if Cruises performance weren’t so good I would have hated this movie and it would have walked away with two stars if lucky. As it stands it’s enjoy while it lasts (though again, I want to point out it’s not very memorable), and if you catch an early bird special or something I’m sure you’ll have a good time. Normally a movie like this would get two and half stars, but today I'm going to round it up to three because I'm in a good mood. I’m not sure whether that’s a recommendation or not, but there you go.
