Title: Inglorious Basterds
|
| CONSUMER ADVICE |
Parents, this is a movie for adults only. While light on sex Tarrantino's rampant use of language and violence is in full force (as always). Recommended for ages 17 and up. |
If you want a historically accurate, emotionally powerful film on World War II and the horror the Nazi’s inflicted on the world...then you might want to re-watch “Schindler’s List” and “Saving Private Ryan” again. If you want to see Nazi’s being killed and Hitler getting the justice he deserved, then Quentin Tarantino’s “Inglorious Basterds” is the film for you. Now the film is misspelled improperly on purpose so that the Weinstein brothers could sell ads to the film in newspapers (if only they had been this clever with Kevin Smith’s overlooked “Zack and Miri Make a Porno”), so with that trivia out of the way I can talk about the movie, which is essentially WWII done “Kill Bill” style.

The story the age old history one where the Nazi’s are taking over everything and it’s time to put them in their place. The Nazi’s are hunted by the Inglorious Basterds, who specialize in one thing and one thing only: Killing Nazi’s. At least this is the position taken by 1st Lieutenant Aldo Raine (Brad Pitt), also known as "Aldo the Apache." He leads the men on the Nazi killing sprees because he wants 100 Nazi scalps. For the Nazi’s that are released he carves a permanent marking on their foreheads. The ultimate goal is to kill Hitler and all of his cronies in one swoop. These feelings are shared by Shosanna Dreyfus (Mélanie Laurent), a French Jewish girl who owns a movie theater. She’s having a world premier of a new Nazi film in her theater, one at which Hitler will be attending.

The goal is to burn the place down with all the Nazi leaders inside. Does this work? If you figured this out from the history books then throw that away, because Tarantino has done a bit of history re-writing. Okay, so it’s a lot of history re-writing. But who cares, the movie is fun. Some are likely to complain that the movie isn’t serious enough, that it takes the plight of WWII lightly. Maybe. But then, after all the suffering people went through, doesn’t it feel good to see the Nazi’s get what’s coming to them? I mean truly GET what’s coming to them?! I thought so. Besides, the story isn’t why this movie is so much fun. Nah, the movie is fun because it has a look and feel all on it’s own. Only Tarantino would make a spaghetti western set in WWII, make the action as over-the-top as it is, and make it work.

He uses classic songs in ways that should be odd but in some way is genius. His actors chew up the screen like they’ve never been in a movie before, and instead of coming off as indulgent it comes off as brilliant. Brad Pitt may be the one getting top billing, but he’s actually the most supporting character in the movie. The most interesting character is Standartenführer Hans Landa (Christoph Waltz), a German who is so effective at catching Jews he earns the nickname “The Jew Hunter.” His character is so delightfully evil and smart, that he almost overshadows all the techniques Tarantino builds up. It’s likely some people will think this is the best film ever made. It’s likely many people will feel this is the worst film ever made. One viewing can’t do it justice. You will likely have a different opinion each time you see it, a different perspective. It’s the sign of great film making, and I look forward to re-visiting it in the near future.
