Title: Fantasia 2000
|
| CONSUMER ADVICE |
Parents, there is nothing objectional in this film. Just mild action violence. Recommended for all ages. |
The original idea of the first “Fantasia” was to make it a constantly evolving event. What would happen is every few months shorts would be rotated in the program, thus making sure the movie always stayed in theaters and brought in money. Artistic ambitions aside this was a great business idea, but alas, it was never meant to be. The film failed at the box office (mainly due to World War II) and the film took years before it finally made it’s money back. Years later Walt Disney’s nephew Roy E. Disney put in motion to try and make “Fantasia” that never ending idea again. The result was “Fantasia 2000," a film that is much like the original in that it has beautiful animation set to classical music, but sadly not as memorable.

Though “Fantasia 2000" is a very entertaining film it lacks the ambition of the original film. There IS a bit of variety in the animation which makes the film visually interesting all the time, but outside of a couple shorts most of them aren’t very brave or daring. The opening sequence with flying whales looks great and is ambitious (if not totally nonsensical), and it’s a shame more of the shorts aren’t like this. There is a short with a flamingo and a yo-yo that is juvenile and feels pointless. A new cartoon starring Donald Duck surprised me because it’s the only short that actually makes an emotional connection with the audience.

Because it was the main selling point of the first movie (and to emphasis the idea that this would become a rotating feature) “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” shows up here too. The classic Mickey short is still wildly entertaining all these years later, but it feels unnecessary here (not to mention it was a complete eyesore at the IMAX screenings). There are celebrities added to introduce each segment, as if the film directors didn’t trust the audience to figure out what the shorts are about themselves. If this review reads like a checklist of what I liked and didn’t like then...yeah, you’d probably be right.

The problem with a movie like “Fantasia 2000" is that outside of the concept nothing really connects with anything. The shorts are all independent. There’s no greater theme. Some of the shorts work, some of them work less. I really hate that stupid flamingo short. So I guess a fair review would be to say “Fantasia 2000" works in parts but not as a whole. Thanks to BluRay you can skip the shorts that don’t work for you. I’m under the impression that this was not enough of a success to rotate the shorts again because there has been no new Fantasia material since this film came out. Maybe it’s just as well though. The original “Fantasia” was a one-of-a-kind accident, and to try and duplicate it is most likely a futile effort.
